Did you know that 40 is one of the most dramatic age spurts for the human body? A host of metabolic shifts start happening at the age of 40. It affects our immunity, cardiovascular health, stem cells, mitochondria, and metabolism, to name a few. These declines continue throughout the rest of our lives.
You can be doing all of the health protocols and advise your doctor gives you, but main stream information is not enough.
What can you do about it? You can let me advise you with your own personal assessment and health plan. I can help you reach your fitness and health goals. As a research scientist, nutritionist, and toxicologist, I read 100's of studies that have proven protocols to better guide you in your quest to age in a much healthier way.
I can also guide you through your doctor's appointments and medical care. This can be extremely beneficial if your doctor is telling you things that do not make sense to you or you feel he/she is not listening to you.
In addition to the metabolic shifts that affect our bodies at the cellular level, the lifestyle and habits you choose further dictate how well you age. Of course, genetics play a role and while you can not change this factor, lifestyle can give you and edge on your ageing process.
One of the significant milestones for women in their 40s is menopause. This natural biological process involves a decrease in hormone production, primarily estrogen. Menopause can bring various symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and vaginal dryness. Managing these symptoms may involve lifestyle changes, hormone replacement therapy, or alternative therapies like herbal remedies or acupuncture.
Heart disease in women becomes a significant concern as they age. Estrogen, which offers some protection against heart disease, declines during menopause. Common heart diseases are heart attack, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to an increased risk. Regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and regular check-ups can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
Breast health is a priority for women of all ages, but it becomes particularly important after the age of 40. Breast cancer can be detected early through regular self-exams and mammograms. Knowing your family history and discussing any concerns with your healthcare provider are crucial steps in managing breast health.
Women over 40 are at an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by decreased bone density and increased susceptibility to fractures. Women undergo various hormonal changes throughout their lives, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. These hormonal changes can affect vitamin D metabolism and utilization. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, regular weight-bearing exercises, and lifestyle modifications like avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can help maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and stress can become more prevalent during this stage of life. Balancing multiple responsibilities, life changes, and hormonal fluctuations can impact emotional well-being. Seeking support from loved ones, practising self-care, engaging in stress-reducing activities, and considering therapy or counselling can contribute to better mental health.
Metabolism tends to slow down as women age, making weight management more challenging. Adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, including strength training to maintain muscle mass, and practising portion control can help manage weight effectively.
Being proactive about your health is crucial as you enter your 40s and beyond. By familiarizing yourself with these common health issues, you can take steps to mitigate their impact and maintain your well-being. Regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and open communication with your healthcare provider are key to managing these health concerns effectively. Remember, your health is a priority, and taking care of yourself ensures you can enjoy life to the fullest at any age.
